The Hospital Macmillan Nurse is employed by Isabel Hospice and the East Herts NHS
Trust. She is based at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital and supports all wards and
departments in the QEII and Hertford Hospitals.
She is a registered nurse who has specialist training and experience in cancer and
palliative care. She offers support and advice to patients and to doctors and nurses
working on the wards. She is available to visit patients in hospital from the time a
diagnosis of cancer is made. She will seek to explain, inform and emotionally
support the patients and their families and friends.
The hospital Macmillan nurse works closely with the other parts of Isabel Hospice and
can access the full range of services and support available, including the community Macmillan team, in-patient unit, day hospice, benefits advisor and family support team.
When patients are discharged from hospital, the hospital Macmillan nurse can put them
in touch with the community Macmillan team and will inform their GP about the referral.
The hospital Macmillan nurse is normally contacted by the doctors and nurses on the
wards. However, she can be called direct by patients or their families while they
are in hospital.
