Volunteer Induction Training

Volunteers who would like to work in Isabel Hospice, helping to care for patients and their families alongside the professional staff, must first complete a short training course. The course has been designed to equip volunteers with the basic skills needed to start voluntary work at Isabel Hospice.

Of course, prospective volunteers will already have many of the skills and qualities necesssary, not least a friendly, kind and caring nature and a willingness to help. The real learning begins after the course when voluntary work has begun. During the course the following topics are covered;

The ethos and Philosophy of Hospice Care.
The Holistic Approach to Caring for Patients
What is Cancer?
Handling and moving skills (including back care)
Basic Food Handling and Hygiene
Anticipatory Grief and Loss
Bereavement
A Patient's Spiritial Journey

After completing the course Volunteers have 'on the job' training at the day Hospice or IN-Patient Unit. Many of our voluntary staff undertake roles in more than one area.

Volunteers may decide to work at the day Hospice as part of a team; at the In-Patient unit on reception duties or working in the bedroom areas; in the community alongside our team of Macmillan Nurses; or assisting with Patient Transport. The experience of giving time to Isabel Hospice is a very rewarding one in whatever are of work chosen.

The course is run twice yearly in the Spring and Autumn. For more information telephone the Voluntary Service Co-ordinator on: 01707 330686.
